Use a hammer and chisel to cut away the peenedover metal, then use a punch to make a hole in the top cap. Soft metal caps on the top and bottom on the steering knuckle protect the kingpins, and these caps are held in place by metal that has been swaged over from the edges of the steering knuckle. New bushings must be installed so the hole in them lines up with the grease fitting. With the kingpin removed the steering knuckle and spindle comes out easily. So you can use it as a drift while driving in the new bushing. Pull out their cotter keys and remove these nuts. Under them you will find large, preloaded castellated nuts that hold the wheel bearings in place. Pull out the cotter pin and take off the main wheel nut. Spread newspaper or plastic tarps on the floor around and under the front wheels, and then pop off the wheel covers.

Question I have is, how do you properly remove the kingpin bushings from the steering knuckles? I tried tapping (rather firmly) with a ball peen hammer and bushing driver of the proper size to match, but they are not budging one bit. The kingpin did not "tap out" as the service manual suggests- I used a 12 ton press and gently pressed them out. I'm in the process of powder coating the various parts that make up the front suspension, and I'm at the point of addressing the steering knuckles. Frame has been media blasted, and I'm half way through the repaint. So I've been happily working along on the Buick, and have gotten the entire frame disassembled from the springs, steering, running gear, etc, etc.
